The class will cover working on both paper and wooden substrates. Demonstrations will include beginning a collage with layered papers or a painted background, working to create individual artworks that reflect each participant’s interests in found materials using other media such as watercolor, acrylic, colored pencils and/or fiber. Techniques will include layering with transparency, integrating imagery, ways to reveal underneath areas, and incorporating found objects all with an emphasis on composition and creating a sense of unity.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="caret-color: rgb(58, 58, 58); Paste</b> reminds me of the thick kind of paste I used when I was in grade school.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">You know the stuff...it came in a jar with its own brush attached to the lid.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">This is a cream colored soft, paste that is thick. I apply it using a paint brush.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">It is 100% acid free and archival, dries clear and a little goes a long way.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I like it for adhering fabric to paper or thicker papers to whatever substrate I am using.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I usually weight it until it is completely dry.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">It was perfect for the burlap with the imbedded plaster on the top left of the piece pictured above.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">In contrast <b>matte gel medium</b> which has multiple uses is a softer adhesive than the Yes Paste.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I have had the most experience with this product. It is my go to adhesive.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">It is also applied with a brush and dries clear, although it retains the brush marks so any excess</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">adhesive, while clear, might show the brush marks if you paint over it.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">That may be desirable or not depending on what one is creating.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Finally, there is <b>PVA Archival Adhesive.</b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">This is used by bookbinders because of its archival quality.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Like the others it dries clear and is strong as well as flexible.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">It looks like Elmers glue but is a more professional product.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I would use it to adhere finished collages to mat board or foam core.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">With all of these products I use a brayer to make sure everything is flat.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Or I might weight the work under a pile of books.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The kinds of materials and mediums an artist uses become a part of the artwork.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I know that a lot of what I do is very ephemeral.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I use materials in the artwork that don't always have a longevity or that may deteriorate</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">over time. I am drawn to that which is damaged yet beautiful.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">But I want the works to last as long as possible so the kinds of adhesives I use</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">are important.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">That may seem kind of counter intuitive but sometimes that is the nature of art.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.claremurrayadams.com">http://www.claremurrayadams.com</a><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.instagram.com/claremurrayadams">http://www.instagram.com/claremurrayadams</a><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div> <p></p>Clare Murray Adamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18127233006579489553noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8257469694529188993.post-51799411320538422212020-05-24T06:18:00.000-07:002020-05-24T06:18:32.461-07:00Doors and Windows<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<i>"That was what artists did, they arranged the unarrangeable<br />into something that made sense." <br /> - Jodi Picoult from </i><u>A Spark of Light</u><br />
<u><br /></u>
That is what I think we all are doing right now as we try to make sense out of this global pandemic.<br />
Even as I write this it seems so surreal.<br />
Life is just currently unarrangeable, at least in the way we are used to doing things.<br />
I think that is what all of my small collages are about.<br />
I am having a hard time concentrating on larger art projects so arranging the flotsam and jetsam<br />
of other artworks and remnants is something I feel I can achieve.<br />
Just like making a small art work is gratifying...a beginning and an end...these collages<br />
allow me to accomplish something in a time when other things resist being arranged.<br />

<br />
I can't begin to count the number of times in the past week that I have read an email<br />
starting with "During these unprecedented times..." or some variation thereof.<br />
I hope you all are coping and staying safe.<br />
As for me, and maybe for others, this is how I used to refer to a snow day from school..."a gift of time."<br />
Time that I could use to make art or catch up on tasks at home.<br />
But in this situation I find that we are challenged with more than just a few days to fill.<br />
We are a week or so in to staying home, really staying home, and the outlook is for more of the same.<br />
Workshops I'm scheduled to teach are on hold or being cancelled.<br />
Exhibits I am in are on hold or being postponed.<br />
<br />
So, in the meantime here is what I am doing in isolation:<br />
<ul>
<li><b>Making art.</b> That 's a given. The piece above is from my "Sheltering in Place" series which I started on the first day of staying home. It is not really about the pandemic but more about using the time that has been given.</li>
<li><b>Updating my website, resume, and bio.</b> These have been on my To Do list for quite awhile so now is the time.</li>
<li><b>Photographing the work.</b> I usually do this as I go, but I don't always document the pieces with dates, sizes, etc. That leads to the next job...</li>
<li><b>Organizing the art inventory.</b> I used to be really good about this. Now I am really bad about it. All the work is saved in my photo folder along with every other picture I have taken. Bad, I know, I know. So now I am working on at least getting the media, the sizes and descriptives on the images so I can more easily find them when I need them. Maybe I will even get them into albums of related pieces or series.</li>
<li><b>Baking.</b> That's also a given. Bread, muffins, granola, good old comfort baking. <b>Creative cooking </b>is happening as well, as I find I don't have everything I need or want for certain recipes, so I have to make due. </li>
<li><b>Reading.</b> I usually find time to read, but I am doing more of that.... reading the news because I should, but reading and enjoying books selected by my book club, books from my long list of 'wanna read', and art books I've had but only ever looked at the pictures. There's some really good stuff in the written parts!</li>
<li><b>Gardening, yard work and weeding. </b>There is plenty of that to do here! I already planted some peas and onions in the garden. Soon I will start tomatoes and a few herbs in doors. And there are still leaves that I did not get to in the fall. It is so good to be outside. </li>
<li><b>Checking in with family and friends. </b>With all of this social distancing I am finding it helpful to text, email or call in order to stay connected. If fact I am probably talking with family and friends more than normal, kind of a bonus turn of events.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><b>And finally Washing my Hands All the Time!! </b></li>
</ul>
<div>
Be safe. Be well.</div>

What to do with a failed artwork?<br />
While the overall piece might not work there are often sections that offer possibility<br />
for exploration.<br />
So after a time I cut out those good bits and work with them.<br />
It is sometimes surprising what can develop.<br />
<br />
The particular piece that these sections came from was quite large for me...30 x 22"<br />
So I think I will be ale to get a few more small pieces out of it.<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Last weekend I had the opportunity to spend time with some </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
really talented quilters from Arizona.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We spent a day reviewing and exploring various compositional arrangements of fabrics, discussing aspects like balance, emphasis or focal point, color, movement and pattern.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Time was spent talking about the importance of the stitching line as an additional element to the finished works. Everyone was well underway after the three days of designing, discussing, experimenting and pushing the boundaries of each participant's usual way of working or thinking about quilt design.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Well Done, Ladies!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here are some of their results!</div>

<br />
This piece is the fourth in a series of five that I did in January.<br />
Ohio winters have a varied look and feel.<br />
They run the gamut from white and snowy to gray and overcast.<br />
We've had lots of gray this year.<br />
My take on this series is more about the emotional aspects of winter.<br />
That heavy, oppressive, weighty feel of short days that seem excessively long.<br />
But it has been good to have the time to do this work.<br />
I love exploring new media and finding a way to make it my own.<br />
<br />
I recently put the five "Weight of Winter" pieces on my website.<br />
I do like the great black and white contrast in these pieces.<br />
The hints of green and pink as the series grew foretells the coming of spring.<br />
Check them out on the <a href="https://www.claremurrayadams.com/admin/path/gallery/138/">website</a>!<br />
They are for sale. <br />

<br />
Most of my art life when painting, I have worked with acrylic paints.<br />
I did use oils in college and was reminded of that as I was sorting through some old slides of my work.<br />
<br />
[Slides!? Remember those? <br />
It has been a long time since I've documented my work with slides now that there is<br />
digital means to do this and the cloud for storing them.]<br />
<br />
But I have strayed from my original intent here...acrylic paint vs. oil paint.<br />
I always liked acrylics because they dried fast and I could add another layer, then another layer, etc,<br />
But the blending and richness of the oil paints especially with the cold wax in them<br />
is very seductive and fun to work with.<br />
I also see the relationship to encaustic painting in the way you can excavate the surface<br />
revealing underneath layers when using oil paints.<br />
But it dries so sloooowly.<br />
I am learning I need to use many thin layers working up to the impasto kind of surfaces in some areas.<br />
I like the tension between thin layers and heavily painted areas.<br />
Just need to apply some patience (not a strong suit of mine).<br />
And perhaps work on more than one piece at time which I often did when working with<br />
the hot wax of encaustic painting.<br />
It's all about the transfer of knowledge from one technique to the next.<br />
This is my current learning curve.<br />

<br />
I'm still finding my way with the oil paint and cold wax, noticing that this<br />
mixture responds differently on the rigid panel than it does on the Arches oil paper.<br />
I want to use these panels since I have several of them so on future pieces<br />
I will be adhering some paper to a few of the boards.<br />
<br />
During the past week the winter I observed outside my windows was gray and overcast.<br />
Much of the week while painting I could see dull brown and light green grass.<br />
The bare branch in the work is a nod to the possibilities of Spring.<br />
And the evidence of high winds which ripped branches from the trees in our yard.<br />
On January 15th as I was closing in on finishing the painting we had a dusting of snow,<br />
so hence the white, which truth be told I really wanted in there whether it had snowed or not.<br />
Some actual observation.<br />
Some memory of winters past.<br />
Some artistic license.<br />
Enough said.<br />

<br />
While we haven't had very much of a snowy winter as winters go in Ohio,<br />
the day I started this small painting we had a good three inches of snow.<br />
It was cold and kind of gray.<br />
I do like all of the seasons that we have in Ohio but often, snow or no snow, winter can be oppressive.<br />
It is not just the weather but also the cabin fever, the lack of sun and being outdoors, and a routine<br />
that is really no routine (if you know what I mean.)<br />
<br />
I have a few more of the panels I used for this piece so want to continue this series throughout January.<br />
It will be interesting to see what my mood inspires as the unusually warm winter weather continues.<br />

<br />
A new year. New media to explore. New commitment to writing.<br />
Who doesn't love new beginnings, second chances, fresh starts and do-overs?<br />
That is what I am hoping for myself in 2020.<br />
<br />
The past two weeks amid all of the holiday plans and events, I have had the most prolific<br />
art making time I have ever had during the Christmas holidays.<br />
Usually I get side tracked by people, travel and/or get togethers that my studio time is neglected.<br />
Sometimes, to be honest, it is just plain procrastination that keeps me from the studio.<br />
Maybe I better make one more batch of cookies.<br />
Or the day is so chopped up that there just isn't enough time to go to the studio.<br />
But somehow this year I have completed the above painting and worked on another project<br />
for an exhibit this summer.<br />
<br />
2020 looks to be a busy one for me in terms of teaching.<br />
Here is a list of the workshops that I am looking forward to teaching.<br />
Hope to see you in the new year!<br />

I came across this quote by the writer Neil Gaiman.<br />
It is my fondest New Year's wish to you.<br />
<br />
<div style="color: #1a1a1a; font-family: Arial; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;">“May your coming year be filled with magic and dreams and good madness. </span></div>
<div style="color: #1a1a1a; font-family: Arial; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;">I hope you read some fine books and kiss someone </span></div>

<div style="color: #1a1a1a; font-family: Arial; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;">And don't forget to make some art, or write, draw, build, sing, </span></div>
<div style="color: #1a1a1a; font-family: Arial; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">"Muse no. 1" (dress)<br />"Potential" (the mixed media collage this muse inspired)<br /><br />After a false start that I spent too much time on I have arrived at this starting point for a series I have been wanting to do for quite some time. "Nine Muses" will involve the sewing of nine dresses, some from commercial patterns as this one is, and result in a mixed media work that uses some of the same materials and imagery as the dress. The use of the materials and imagery is just the jumping off point for the artwork which can, and <br />I hope will, evolve into works that are layered and nuanced and somewhat abstract.<br /><br />One of the challenges or criteria of the work is to repurpose materials that would have been otherwise discarded.<br />The top of dress incorporates white fabric that was salvaged from a 5 and 10 kind of store that was going out of business.<br />The skirt is a discarded sheet that was languishing in a drawer for I don't know how many years.<br />And the leaves are from plastic bags, hand stitched to the dress bodice and skirt.<br /><br />The artwork has all of those elements in it plus other fabrics, acrylic paint, shellac and used tea bags.<br />The Muses (or dresses) will just be numbered without titles or names.<br />But the artworks that result from the muse will be titled.<br />This one, "Potential", refers to the potential promised in the beginning of a new series<br />as well as the potential offered by the promise of spring represented by the leaves, colors and the time of year in which this work was made.<br /><br />I am not giving myself a time period for completing the series.<br />I will continue to make some small work, do some teaching and tend the gardens <br />with the Muses in my thoughts as I go about the maintenance of daily life.<br /><br />Things for me to ponder besides the making of dresses and mixed media collages:<br />Why are the Muses unnamed?<br />What about this series compels me?<br />Why do I return to making dresses as a means of expression? Are they self referential or<br />do they have a more universal appeal?<br />How does the scale of the 2D work affect my process? This one is 22 x 30" while I have been working<br />in the 12 x 12" and smaller range.<br /><br />All of this I have been thinking about while making the actual dress and collage.<br />Here I have committed the thoughts to paper which makes all of those thoughts concrete.<br />This demands more of me.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.claremurrayadams.com/">www.claremurrayadams.com</a><br /><a href="http://instagram.com/claremurrayadams">instagram.com/claremurrayadams</a><br /><br /><br /></td></tr>

<br />
I'm not sure what drives me to make 2-sided works.<br />
They are certainly hard to display.<br />
This one's presentation was a bit easier as I knew from the beginning it would either be suspended<br />
or stand on some kind of base. <br />
<br />
Self Portraits are always a bit challenging.<br />
One has to be willing to reveal some inner thoughts, emotions and some kind of imagery that references self.<br />
I really don't like having my picture taken so I opt for an image that is self referential instead of a photo.<br />
Therefore the "Then" side incorporates drawings I did of my granddaughter while the "Now" side uses photos of a torso sculpture I did several years ago and have photographed and reused many times including in<br />
my artist's book titled "Self Portrait at Sixty".<br />
The face you see in the third window pane on the top row is an image I have used for over 25 years<br />
to represent myself. I like the continuity of repeated and reinvented imagery which keeps the work <br />
both ongoing and current.<br />
<br />
While my blogging and posting on Instagram have slowed waaaay down, I am still working both on small collages and larger more conceptual work. As always I appreciate your comments and your taking the time to read this blog.<br />
